Mr. Massie noted that for a number of years the Fire and Rescue Association asked for huge increases every year. He said the library has been getting 13 percent increases and now is asking for a 22 percent increase. “I’m searching for some point where it will start leveling off. We’ve finally reached it with the fire department,” he said. “I can support a 22 percent increase if you can promise you won’t ask for an increase next year,”
Dr. Young said, “JSvery book that is given needs somebody’s time to put it into circulation.'^ don’t know if it’s possible. It’s not realistic to expect it to level off. The population will increase. We hope to ask for less of an increase.”
Mr. Barton said the Friends have already started an endowment fund to expand the building at some time in the future.
Board member Frank Warner said the board would probably not » ask for another 22 percent next year, but important capital needs such as paving the driveway and parking area have been put off. “As responsible stewards we could do no less than come to the board with this number,” he said.
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said, “I anticipated this. You can do more for people, so more people are going to come. The road will suffer more. With as much support as you get from volunteers, we need to support you to the maximum extent possible.”
