In the late 1700s, Americans abandoned formal gardens for landscapes with broad vistas, rolling lawns, shadowy wildernesses, and an occasional and rare architectural whimsy that evoked ‘surpirse and wonder.’ By 1802, Madison had formulated a plan for an English park in the picturesque manner.
The path from the front portico was flanked by rows of white pine. Silver poplar and weeping willow screened the outbuildings to the left of the mansion. To the right of the house was a grove of aspen, and the rear portico overlooked a wide lawn bounded by a “ha-ha,” a fence set in a ditch. The fence kept the livestock off the lawn, but being situated in a depression, it was not visible from the house.
