The Office of Pesticide Management in the Virginia Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services will continue to work through the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and other agricultural groups to prepare for implementation of the requirements that will go into effect next year.
In the meantime, specific requirements listed on pesticide labels involving personal protective equipment, time restrictions on entry into an area after pesticide treatment, and the requirements for oral and posted warnings of pesticide applications went into effect on April 15.
“Many growers are looking at this summer as a trial period, as are a lot of agriculutral pesticide applicators. So we urge everyone to move ahead and be prepared to implement the Worker Protection Standard when it goes into effect,” said Dr. Marvin Lawson, program manager for the Office of Pesticide Management with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
“We needed the delay. This will give our growers a chance to make this transition without msgor adverse impact to their operations,” added Virginia Agriculture Commissioner J. Carlton Courier III.
