However, this involves some responsibility and a few risks, such as falls, strokes, sudden illnesses and other accidents. Approximately 1,191 of Rappahannock County residents—18 percent—are over 60 years old and among them are a number of individuals who live alone and who do not go out to work every day or have a nearby friend or relative who sees or calls them daily.
For these people a telephone call at an arranged hour once a day may mean the difference between life and death, or between complete recuper-! i ation and permanent disability. In addition it could being welcome relief to the children, relatives and friends of people who live alone to know that a concerned community will act promptly should there be an emergency.
A new safety net, PhoneLine, will soon be available for those who would like to join with others in a circle of brief telephone check-up calls made once a day. This is not a commercial venture, and there will be no charge.
