In back of the house, Madison’s French gardener, Beazee, laid out a terraced, horseshoe-shaped garden edged with boxwood. Dolley Madison assisted in the planning of this space. Strawberries, grapes, and fruit trees, including figs, may have been the offsprings of those Jefferson brought back from France.
The garden boasted a wide variety of flowers, particularly roses. Two large tulip trees, known as “the twins” towered over the landscape. Jasmine and roses climbed on the pillars of the rear portico, and sweetbrier grew close to the house.
