A1 and Cheryl Kellert’s new winery at Gray Ghost Vineyards in Amissville played host to 250 wine tasters during their opening last weekend.
The tasting room and winery are housed in an old stable on their property. Upon entering the tasting room, visitors are offered a taste of wine, and a tour of the winemaking process, if desired. The room is set up to handle several people at once, and the Kellerts’ vast collection of wine glasses is on display on both ends of the room.
Tables and chairs are set up outside, looking over the vineyards, and picnicking is encouraged.
The Kellerts planted their first grape vines in the spring of 1987. It takes at least five years before a sizeable crop is harvested, but once the vines are established, they produce for many years. Their nine acres of grapes include Vidal Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Riesling.
The Vidal Blanc is available for tasting and sales in the winery now, and the 1993 Chardonnay is due to be released around August 7. Their first red wine to be released, Cabernet Franc, may be ready for sale this fall. Mr. Kellert is producing two separate Cabernet Sauvignons, one of which is reserved in French oak barrels.
