Having served as the volunteer administrative assistant to the most recent Town Council for at least four years, I am appalled that current Town Council’s approach to fiscal conservatism appears to be nonexistent.
It seems that there is a limitless budget for hiring persons for every imaginable task formerly ably accomplished by the mayor, the treasurer, the clerk and the volunteer administrative assistant. The remuneration offered through the advertisement for employment exceeds by 25 percent any compensation paid our former treasurer, as well as wages paid many, if not most, locally based administrative personnel.
It is very distressing that this council, having run on a platform of citizen participation, is so lacking in team spirit that the only solution to the various tasks at hand seems to be “we’ll pay somebody to do it” without making any public effort to see if volunteers might be available.
Tom Zumwalt’s statement during the July 13 Town Council meeting, that: someone should have informed him of all the requirements of the office of treasurer prior to his becoming a candidate for this office certainly points out the shortsightedness of Mr. Zumwalt in acquainting himself thoroughly with our town government, before making himself available for election. Perhaps his slightly less than eight months as an actual resident of the Town of Washington, and attendance at one Town Council meeting prior to his candidacy, was insufficient for him to grasp the magnitude of the responsibilities he now appears to want to “delegate.”
