This weekend his sons played in a four-on-four soccer tournament in Culpeper. Following the tournament, he said, everyone went to Pancho Villas to watch the final game between Brazil and Italy.
He said his family was divided, with one son favoring Brazil and one favoring Italy.
He said he hopes the increased popularity of soccer due to the World Cup will lead to more parents learning about the game and helping to coach in the county soccer league.
High school coach Uli Maeyer said he believes the school team’s success last year combined with more attention to soccer in the World Cup will lead to more athletes coming out for the soccer team next year. Watching soccer played at the World Cup level is “like seeing a beautiful woman,” he said. He said he knows his players have been following the games.
He believes Americans have been watching the games who had no previous connection to soccer. “They see a lot of action with no breaks like in football,” he said. It s commercial-free, two hours of entertainment. Soccer is on the move already. Now it’s moving faster, he added.
Dennis and Cheryl Fairbrother have a satellite dish. “We’ve been watching more TV and drinking more beer," Mr. Fairbrother said recently. He and his children were also out for the four-on-four tournament in Culpeper this weekend.
