Many gardeners prefer to use bone meal as a slow-release source of phosphorus for their bulbs. However, due to the extended processing of bones used to produce bone meal, available phosphorus is significantly reduced and should not be counted on as the only source of phosphorus. Bring a soil sample into your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office to determine if the soil contains nutrients for optimal plant growth.

Avoid the temptation to plant hyacinths in stiff rows and stark geometric patterns. They look best when nestled among shrubbery or ground covers or interplan ted in clumps with other bulb^ flowers. Since hyacinths grow about ten inches tail, they are especially effective in combination with daffodils and tulips. If hyacinths are used in borders, plant them two or three rows deep, rather than in a single row. Mix and match colors for maximum effect.
