Split Games
The Rappahannock Monarchs split a double header with the Woodstock Raiders Sunday in Apple Valley Baseball League action.
Rapp took a loss in the opener 133. Highlights for Rapp were Reggie Williams with a two-run homer and two singles by Vincent “Pops” Aylor.
Rapp came back to bring home the second game 5-3. Bob Howard led Rapp with a three-run double, and once more “Pops” Aylor came through with a double and a single. Luther Alexander was the winning pitcher. *
This ends the regular season. Rapp ended up tied for second place with New Market, but New Market defeated Rapp three games to one during regular season play. This gives New Market second place and the home field advantage.
The playoffs begin Saturday July 23 at 2 p.m. at Rebel Park in New Market. They will continue at RCHS Sunday at 2 p.m.

Brion Patterson, physics and chemistry teacher at Rappahannock County High School, is one of 12 Virginia teachers selected as state finalists in the 1994 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.
The teachers will each receive a $750 award from the National Science Foundation. The Virginia finalists are eligible for the national Presidential Awards, which are announced in the fall. A national selection panel will meet in Washington and name one person in mathematics and one in science from both the elementary and secondary levels from each state or jurisdiction.
Funded by the NSF, the Presidential Awards program has identified superior science and mathematics teachers since 1983. Teachers must have spent at least five years in the classroom and can be nominated by students, parents, administrators or colleagues.
