Busy poring over bulb catalogs and making decision for fall planting? Consider putting in hyacinths this year.
Hyacinth bulbs are planted in the fall and require very little maintence. Hardy perennials, hyacinths will continue to bloom for several years, although the quality of the flower decreases each year in many areas.
Plant When Soil
Is About 60 F
Plant hyacinth bulbs when the soil temperature has fallen to 60 F. In Virginia, this generally occurs from October to early December.
Hyacinths prefer partial shade. Avoid planting them in areas that receive direct midday sun. Good drainage is essential. Break up and loosen the soil to a depth of ten inches. If the soil is mostly clay, start preparing your site one or two years ahead of time by mixing in an organic material such as compost (up to 30 percent in volume). Bulbs will
