The 12-year-old boy had no idea one of his toes had just been lopped off by a jagged pipe. His foot was numb after standing in frigid spring water running below a summer ice pit.
“Your foot! It’s bleeding!” screamed the children as they scattered for help across the rustic mountaintop Blue Ridge resort. Little Wallace Dyar was thrown into the back of the buckboard used to ferry guests up and down the steep mountain road for the three-hour trip to Luray and medical help.
Weeks passed that summer of 1920 before Wallace recovered sufficiently to make the long trip back up to Stony Man Camp where his Uncle George ran the magical kingdom called Skyland. Skyland! A place where grownups lived in. log cabins, dressed up like cowboys and Indians, and summered high above the clouds.
