man fire. Thirteen men are entombed there, men whocgave their lives with many others fo? th)e freedom and happiness we now enjoy.

The President and •] veterans tossed a wreath of memorium onto the cold dark, fog-covered ocean. I couldn’t imagine the great fear and helplessness these men must have felt as they looked death in the eye, and as they had their last thoughts of their wives, families, loved ones, and children they had never seen. I also thought of how often, as Americans, we take these things, these blessings from God for granted.

But as I saw the pride in the tears of the veterans I felt a strong uplifting peace that I was part of something extraordinary. These veterans were so proud of us and appreciated it so much that we had honored them. These men who went into battle with but a prayer that God would deliver them from death were receiving the recognition they well-deserved. God’s hand of mercy fell upon these few men that I met. But even though much blood was shed and many died, it was for a great purpose, and it is our responsibility to remember.
