The School Board enthusiastically approved plans to teach “values” in school this year.
April Heddleston made a presentation on the work of committees working at both schools to plan for teaching values. A survey of parents last year indicated that they favored having the schools teach values.
Mrs. Heddleston said the committee had worked out plans to teach seven character traits at the elementary school. The year will begin with “Citizenship” in September. Mrs. Heddleston said the committee was recommending that the character education curriculum be integrated with the rest of the curriculum, particularly the study of literature, and not taught as a separate subject.
Responsibility would be the featured virtue to be taught in October and Respect in November. Kindness would be emphasized in December and January. Honesty in February, Cooperation in March, and Self-discipline in April. The year would end with Appreciation of Learning in May and June.
