That scenario, one predicted by some pundits, seems unlikely to happen now. The basic reason is that any Republicans who publicly back Coleman will be likely targets of future retribution should they try to re-enter party politics.
It would mean they would not be welcome at party committee meetings, mass meetings, at party sponsored fund raisers, picnics and the like. And with a Republican in the statehouse, it would also cut off their invitation to gubernatorial sponsored events and certainly to any possibility of a future gubernatorial appointment to some prestigious board or commission.
Indeed, some Republicans who last year rapped their party’s nominee for lieutenant governor, Mike Farris, are finding fines of communication between them and GOP officials cut even if they did back George Allen for governor.
