To the Editor:
There are a number of good policy reasons to support the re-election of Senator Charles Robb this November. All the voting tallys I have seen show him to be a generally positive force in the Senate. Rarely have I felt that a Virginia politician represents me as well as Senator Robb does.
In this election, however, there is a greater issue than a partisan one. That issue is one of governmental process and the survival of our form of government. Today, from many directions, attacks of a wounding character are being leveled at the government as well as at the underlying assumptions our government rests upon. Those attacks must be recognized and defended against.
When a majority of the people believe that government cannot represent them, cannot assure safety, justice and the general welfare, then the society is fundamentally threatened. A number of interests are working to bring about such a result and Oliver North’s candidacy is a factor in this undertaking.
Oliver North’s candidacy for the Senate is based on his notoriety achieved during the Congressional hearings into the Iran-Contra scandal. That scandal arose because government officials in high positions undertook illegal actions. During the Congressional investigation into the matters in question, Oliver North became a prominent spokesman for what seems to have been a conspiracy to subvert not only contemporary laws but the Constitution itself.
