You may need to carry your driver’s license and credit card with you, but you can leave your Social Security card at home except when you need it for a specific reason, such as applying for a job or opening a bank account.
It might be advisable to keep the card where you put your birth certificate, insurance policies and other important documents. This precau-. tion could prevent your card from being lost or stolen. And it is important to protect both your card and, your number. \
We use the number to record your earnings and, because your future benefits are based on those earnings, you should make sure your record is accurate. You can check your record by calling 1-800-7721213 and asking for a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement.
If your card is lost or stolen, you can get a replacement by calling or visiting a Social Security office. You’ll need to file an application and submit evidence of your identity. You also may need to prove your U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status.
Also, if your card is lost or stolen, someone else may use your number, and that could cause you problems in the future. If you have evidence that someone else is using your Social Security number, contact us right away.
