Even though hers is a pick-yourown orchard, Mrs. Whetzel usually helps her customers pick, and points out the best trees for picking. She is open for business whenever her sign is out on the highway.
Mrs. Whetzel also expects a late crop of tomatoes and Silver Queen com. She has 80 tomato plants, so will probably sell mostly by the bushel.
i The Jenkins’ orchard, located on Route 621 in Woodville, has a limited supply of peaches, but they also have damson plums and Rambo apples. They are open every day from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. but it might be a good idea to call ahead for availability. The phone number is 9878192. The Jenkins’ family will have pears and apples later on in the season.
Leon and Betty Hutcheson, at Sunset Hills Farm in Washington have quite a few peaches for sale, many of them weighing nearly a pound apiece. Most of their peach crop is made into their brandied peaches and peach butter. The Hutchesons are located across the road from the Rappahannock County High School, and recommend calling ahead for availability, at 987-8804.
The roadside stands between Sperryville and Amissville have varying amounts of peaches.
