Rainfall amounts varied according to where the measurements were made. At Dennis Wingfield’s house in Sperryville 3.93 inches were recorded between midnight and noon Tuesday.
Heavier rain fell early Sunday when 4.09 inches were recorded. Altogether 12.54 inches were recorded from June 1 and early afternoon Tuesday, according to Cathy Wingfield.
Emergency Services Coordinator Dieter Kneupfer reported that 8.1 inches fell at his house near Massie’s Comer between 6 p.m. Monday night and 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
He reported three vehicles had been swept into the Rush River, but none were occupied.
Sheriff Woodward reported that there was a flood watch for Sperryville Saturday night, and the Thornton River passing through the town came to the top of its banks but did not spill out.
Sperryville was less hard hit in Tuesday’s flooding than areas to the east, he said.
