the fifth. Howard led off with a single and moved to second on a single by William Parker. Luther Alexander, batting for the first time in the game, scored Howard with a single. Then Festus Clanagan drove a sacrifice fly to deep center field, allowing Parker to trot home easily. The next three Monarch hitters, Andy Furr, Frye and Bill Atkins drove in one run apiece with back-to-back-toback doubles. When Hackley scored Atkins with a single, the Monarchs took an 8-2 lead and effectively put the game out of reach.
The Monarchs received yet another masterful pitching performance from Alexander in the second game. Alexander improved to 4-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to a team leading 1.68. In seven innings, Alexander allowed one earned run, six hits, one walk, and struck out five. When Woodstock’s third base man, Joe Cheff, led off the sixth inning with a home run, he snapped Alexander’s string of consecutive scoreless innings at 15.
