Jennifer Alexander said the goals section of the Comprehensive Plan should include recreation. She said she was willing to pay higher taxes to keep open space by having the county buy up lands to protect river byways and access to the Shenandoah National Park.

Carolyn Butler said the county government should concentrate on enforcing the ordinances it has.

Mark Malek said it might be necessary to purchase steep slopes and mountain tops to prevent them from being developed.

Chris Moyles suggested working with VDOT to have more wildflower plots along highways. He said he was pleased the county is considering establishing an artificial wetland to treat leachate at the landfill and hoped the Town of Washington would consider an artificial wetland for its sewage treatment.

Mr. Massie invited those in the audience who are seeking elected office this fall to speak.

Sheriff candidate Gary Settle said when he was stationed away from Rappahannock he missed the county’s scenic beauty and people. He encouraged the planners to promote recreation for youth.
