The Town of Washington, known as “the first Washington of them all,” is throwing a big, old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration that would make George proud.
All day long on Tuesday, July 4 the historic town will be the site of patriotic festivities and small-town Americana as visitors and residents alike participate in the celebration of the Fourth of July.
There will be bicycle parade for children, square dancing, banjo playing, a jug band in which children can participate, and a variety of music ranging from jazz to gospel. Following the day-long festivities, there will be a barbecue dinner, more music and then fireworks at 9 p.m.
This year’s Fourth of July celebration is being coordinated by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community (RAAC).
The day starts off at 10 a.m. with a stroll down Gay Street, which will be lined with more than 40 booths and vendors, displaying their jewelry, crafts and other wares, including food, ice cream and homebaked goodies.
The Friends of the Rappahannock Library will be holding a book sale at the Town Hall.
At the Historical Society people can get copies made of old photographs.
There will be patriotic singing and speeches in front of the courthouse on Gay
