shelter, but they all developed thick black coats and hardly used the shelter at all.
The meat of the water buffalo has less fat and cholesterol than beef, and is more tender, according to Mrs. Dixon. Her daughter Cathy said that the milk of the water buffalo has the highest butterfat content of all, four times what a beef cow would produce.
The Dixons keep a few donkeys on their farm in Viewtown, and keep another 60 on a farm in Castleton. The males are called jacks and the females are jennies.
On the Viewtown farm, a donkey is used to halter break a calf. A chain connects the two animals for about two days, so that when the donkey wants a drink of water, the calf must go along with her. After that short period of time, said Mrs. Dixon, the calf is halter broke.
Mrs. Dixon’s granddaughter Melissa Dixon shows both Simmental and Brahman cattle at the 4-H Farm Show every year in Culpeper, as her mother Cathy did before her. Melissa has been showing cattle in the 4-H Show since she was six years old.
While travelling around the farm safari-style in an Isuzu Trooper, all of the animals visited were friendly and mostly well-behaved. In the field with the pure bred registered herd of American grey and red Brahmans, whenever the Trooper stopped the cattle immediately headed toward the truck and stick their heads in the windows for a pat on the head or a little snack. One of them, however, stuck his head in the back window where Cathy and Melissa sat, and let out a loud burp. The Trooper took off with little hesitation.
