were very young, so they are used to each other and will breed easily, she said.
Mrs. Dixon bought Zeebee from an exotic animal dealer. “It is a fad,” she said. “Exotic animals are in now, whether they be birds, emus, llamas or other animal.” The offspring of the zebra and donkey will at least have stripes on the legs, if not all over, she said.
The zebra is not the only unusual animal on the Dixie Meadows Farm. Mrs. Dixon, who owns the farm with her husband John, also has a herd of nine water buffalo. She got them just over a year ago, and has eight females and one bull. All of the females are expecting to calve at any time now.
The water buffaloes, which have been domesticated for well over 6,000 years are the oldest domesticated breed of animal in the world, said Mrs. Dixon. Most water buffaloes live in southern areas, including the Philippines, the Mideast, Vietnam and Thailand. Mrs. Dixon said they are about the easiest of all cattle to raise.
Water buffalo are not to be confused with the American buffalo also known as bison. The water buffalo really loqk more like cows than the bison. They love to wallow in pools of muddy water.
