In the Woodstock half of the fifth, the defensive play of the day was turned in by Atkins, the Monarchs’ center fielder. Atkins, who was lined up in right-center field, made a running one handed catch three steps from the left-center field fence to rob Woodstock’s catcher, Ron Dalton, of extra bases.
The Monarchs threatened in the third when they left men on first and second, and in the fourth when Tony Williams, in the game as a courtesy runner for the catcher, stole second and third with one out, but the Monarchs couldn’t get him across the plate. So, the score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Parker led off with a single, moved to second when Nils Aylor walked, and scored on a base hit by Furr.
