MAURERTOWN - On Sunday the Rappahannock Monarchs kept their hold on first place in the Apple Valley Baseball League by sweeping a doubleheader from the Woodstock Raiders. The Monarchs won the first game 10-5 and took the second 2-1 to improve to 8-1 on the year.
Stoney Frye pitched the first game and improved his season record to 2-0. Frye went all seven innings, striking out 11, walking five and surrendering a paltry four hits. Frye did not allow an earned run, lowering his ERA to 2.00.
Offensively, the Monarchs scored twice in the first inning. Leadoff man, Brian Hackley, was hit by the first pitch of the game. Vincent Aylor stepped up next and promptly tripled Hackley in. Later in the inning, Bob Howard scored Aylor with a double.
