mixed up. Dad wants to cure Mary Jo through nutrition. Mom is the peacemaker. Julie is the caregiver. But Mary Jo can’t be cured. Life is really like that.
A depressing play? No, oddly enough. There’s so much genuine feeling, so much genuine love, so much genuine joy in it, all you feel at the end is this: What a fascinating life Ms. Portman has had. And what a talented performer, to be able to play a half-dozen roles so convincingly. And, finally, how lucky Ms. Portman is to be married to the man who composed the music of her plays and who sits nearby on stage, playing his instruments.
Julie Portman and Paul Reisler fit like old shoes. Both have national reputations, Ms. Portman for Obie award-winning theater and Mr. Reisler for founding and directing the music group Trapezoid. Yet they seem as comfortable, as harmonious, as a couple of locals sitting around a woodstove at a country store.
My Sister’s Sister was performed , only once last year at Rappahannock County’s Ki Theatre. Rappahannock News reviewer Carl Coon said: “We started with high expectations, and the performance exceeded them.” Mr. Coon said Ms. Portman’s “dazzling” performance brought the audience to its feet at the end. The show is appropriate for anyone from preteens to the elderly.
The performances on Oct. 20 and 21 are the only ones scheduled locally for this season. For tickets, call Ki Theatre at 675-1616. In Rappahannock County, purchase them at Mountainside Market or Cabin Fever Books. The advance price is $10 for adults, half-price for children.
