An all-Russian program marks the start of the 1995-1996 season for the Washington Cristofori Ensemble. The opening concert takes place at 3 p.m.' on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Hie Theatre at Washington.
Martin Berkofsky, artistic director of the ensemble, chose two of the mainstays of Russian musical literature for the program: Sergei Rachmaninoffs Sonata Op. 19 in G minor for cello and piano, a work composed in December 1901, and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Op. 50 in A minor for piano, violin and cello, which is dedicated to the memory of Nicolas Rubinstein.
The Cristofori Trio is the core of the ensemble which made its debut as resident ensemble at the Theatre at Washington last season, and performs at the opening concert. Mr. Berkofsky is the Trio’s pianist, Judith Spokes violinist and Kang Xia cellist. When he is not performing abroad, Mr. Berkofsky resides in Fauquier County.
