He sees RLEP and PERC as interested in preserving the character of the county and region. “Ragged Mountain I see more as participating and coordinating the component parts that define and create that character,” said Mr. Harris.
“I see one of the goals as promoting the practical philosophy that we all can teach to and learn from one another cooperatively more than competitively,” he added.
Mr. Harris also hopes to coordinate projects between the Rappahannock Farmers’ Association, Virginia Association of Biological Farmers, the Farm Bureau and farmers. He said that he hopes the public forum process will bring them together, and that a project can be begun to look at agriculture as a community.
“This is a true community issue,” he said. One possibility would be to have a farmer’s market in the parking lot ot the Rappahannock Farmers’ Co-op on U.S. 211. In the mid 1980’s there was a Small Farmers’ Market in the county which was quite successful.
Local photographer Ted Pellegatta and the Resource Center have collaborated on a color calendar which should be available at the end of November. Mr. Harris said that photos will capture the beauty of Rappahannock and surrounding mountains. It will be a fundraiser to help create a solution to the Old Rag
