The Board of Supervisors agreed Monday to pay for unused vacation time for all Sheriffs Office employees that the state Compensation Board will not pay for.
Sheriff John Henry Woodward explained that most of his employees have not been able to take all the time off they are entitled to because of having to cover for others taking classes or when a position is temporarily vacant. The state Compensation Board will pay for a limited amount of leave time when an employee is terminated. The number of hours depends on the employee’s length of time in service. But these employees have time in excess of that amount, Sheriff Woodward explained.
Sheriff Woodward said the new sheriff has the right to replace these employees with his own people. He said for the county to pay for the unused vacation time would cost $16,687. Another $20,000 is available in the budget from part-time salary monies that have not been spent, and that would also be used for this purpose, he said.
