Senior citizens who volunteer their time and expertise at the county’s public schools are a great asset to Rappahannock.
Jan Makela, volunteer coordinator for the schools, said, “Of all the volunteers in the system it seems die seniors are the most committed and consistent....The teachers depend on them and the children look forward to it.”
Some of the seniors have been volunteering at the schools for several years, and some are new this year. For the past nine years, Frances Thornton has been helping out in the office of the elementary school on Wednesdays, ever since she retired after working for 36 years as the public health nurse. Her job frequently involved work at the schools and she found she enjoyed that so she has continued.
In the office she does filing, answers the telephones and has various other duties. “I saw where they really needed help, and I really like being with the children,” she said.
