Other medical news came from Chicago in October. The story dealt with an experiment at the Brookfield Zoo’s Mouse House. Common whitefooted field mice, humanely trapped in nearby woodlands, were bred with one another for four successive generations. Then the inbred mice were released to see how long they survived.
It was bad news for incest: “The inbred mice died faster and more often than non-inbred mice.”
Medical statistics are enough to make any reader blink. In an ad for Advil, we learn that “One of America’s most common health problems, arthritis, now affects half of every person over age 65.” And the other half is affected by pain in the lower back.
