In October the Rappahannock News received a letter to the editor from Athey J. Sisk of Amissville complaining about being detained at a state police sobriety checkpoint for over half an hour.
Mr. Sisk claimed that he was detained for over 30 minutes on Sept. 30 at the Culpeper county line on U.S. 211 for denying consent to search his vehicle, a pickup truck. He said that Trooper Chuck Moore would not allow him to leave the checkpoint, and that he was asked three times if they could search his vehicle.
Mr. Sisk said he didn’t allow them to search his vehicle because “I did not feel the state police needed to waste our valuable tax money on a needless and pointless search.” Further, he said, “I was swarmed by three state troopers’ cars. Finally I was forced to let a K-9 unit search around and circle the outside perimeter of my vehicle. Officer Prailey of Culpeper took it upon himself to enter the rear of my pickup with his K-9 and search the bed of my truck. I don’t think that’s circling my vehicle; that’s illegal search.”
Repeated efforts to contact Trooper Moore about this incident have been unsuccessful.
