Jesse Reynolds, a 21 year-old who attends college and works in a law ojffice, said that he has been stopped dozens of times, sometimes by Sheriff's deputies as well as the State Police, and each time he is asked if his vehicle could be searched. By law, drivers do not have to give consent to a search unless there is probable cause or a search warrant.
“I think a young male wearing certain clothes will get stopped,” said Mr. Reynolds, adding that he has never been stopped while wearing a tie, which he wears to work every day.
Mr. Reynolds said that he understands the pressures that are on troopers to enforce the laws, but he believes that state troopers have a responsibility to use good judgment.
A county woman in her 20’s, who asked that her name not be used, said that she used to be stopped “pretty regularly” for two years by the same state trooper. “1 got tired of it after a while,” she said.
One time she tested him by driving through the county at exactly 50 mph, 5 mph under the speed limit. She said the trooper stopped her and said she was speeding, but admitted that the equipment normally used to clock a vehicle’s speed was not used. She did not receive a speeding ticket that time, and the trooper has been leaving her alone since then, she said.
