So much for blinkers in sports. A puzzler appeared in Birmingham, Ala., last October in a story about sex education. The story was clear enough, but the headline seemed opaque: “Abstinence: Many say teens can’t do without it.” Or do with it either.
Getting back to double negatives, I liked an item from The Associated Press in January. The story had to do with the difficult task of closing military bases. “The defense secretary said the Pentagon is well aware of the pain that military base closures cause and will not close any base that is not needed.” That policy might not thwart the whole purpose of not keeping unneeded bases open, but then again, it might. Hard to say.
