School Closings
As a piece by Bonnie Price Lofton in this week’s Rappahannock News points out, there are no easy solutions to the problem of clos; ing school because of weather.
Tuesday night the School Board considered and again rejected a plan to run buses only on hard surfaced roads.
Transportation director David Smith pointed out that this would 1 require some extensive changes in several routes, with some stu; dents being picked up 40 minutes earlier than on regular runs and ! others being picked up 40 minutes later.
Parents who are frustrated now might well find not knowing when their children would be picked up or dropped off even more frustrating.
Additionally the school system must consider what to do with Si child who has no one to meet him when the bus arrives as his drop off point, sometimes several miles from his home. The solution included with the proposal was to bring the child back to school to wait for a parent to come pick him up. That requires $Qmeone staying at the school to supervise those children who tetumed.
Perhaps the county should spring for the cost of air conditioning the schools completely and run school through the summer-but close from Christmas through February.
