Irresponsible
To the Editor:
I feel increasingly disheartened by the cavalier tone of this paper’s editorial page. In the last two weeks, we have been treated to two lead editorials characterized by unthinking and irresponsible editorial positions.
The first supported VDOT’s plan for a bypass/connector around Sperryville; the second expressed dismay at the recent vote by the Board of Supervisors to close the county’s two open dumpsters.
Doesn’t this paper realize that VDOT’s plan is: 1) contrary to the expressed desires of Sperryville residents; 2) totally in opposition to the resolution passed by our Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors more than a year ago; and 3) yet another giveaway to Virginia’s obscenely powerful truck lpbby? VDOT needs to look into other, noninvasive ideas for the traffic flow in and through Sperryville, such as those now under discussion by concerned citizens educated in the communityfriendly ISTEA manner of traffic planning.
As for the dumpsters, is this paper unaware of the significant hazard these pose for our health and environmental safety? Last week’s edition of Science stated that seven percent of our planet’s water is potable; it estimates that at current rates of consumption (and waste), this will fall to zero in 30 years. Please, as the bumper sticker exhorts, think globally, but act locally.
