where trucks have difficulty negotiating the corner and the steel truss bridge across the Thornton River which is nearing the end of its useful life if the road is to continue to cany heavy truck traffic.
Most of the opponents were concerned that the bypass is one further step in a project that will eventually lead to the four-laning of U.S. 522 from Front Royal to Culpeper and possibly of Route 231 also.
Truck traffic on Route 231 is currently limited by another steel truss bridge at Banco in Madison County which carries a 24-ton weight limit. VDOT intends to replace that bridge this summer by moving the road and bridge downstream. When the new bridge is in place, more truck traffic
