rectly, your own report stated that of the 40 or so people in attendance, only two spoke in favor of the bypass with the rest speaking against it. I realize that you are not'obligated (in theory) to take a stance reflective that of the majority view on any particular issue. But in a case such this where over 90 percent of the people at a public hearing speak out against a particular issue, how can you justify supporting it?
There are two issues of importance when considering the bypass. Will it increase truck traffic and will it affect business in the , town of Sperryville? The answer in my mind to both of those questions is “Yes.” It will increase truck traffic which will put pressure on VDOT to “improve” U.S. 522 and perhaps even Route 231. Once those “improvements” are made, truck traffic will increase yet again. I believe virtually everyone in the county is against increased truck traffic, so that is a no brainer.
While this may require a little more thought, 1 firmly believe business in Sperryville will be affected, and it will be affected in a negative manner. Comparisons have been made to the effect of the 211 bypass on Washington, but allow me to rpake a few comparisons of my own. Washington has the historic Courthouse and the county offices, all of them. Sperryville has an aging VFW/Rescue Squad building. Washington has a bank. Sperryville has the Comer Store where Randolph will occasionally cash your check if he has the money and if your check is good. Washington has The Inn. Sperryville has (he sewage treatment plant.
