Lyle and Melinda Alexander circulated petitions saying “I strongly oppose the building of a Sperryville connector road and want VDOT to terminate the study.” Mrs. Alexander said almost everyone they talked with signed the petition.
Opponents of the bypass also showed an alternative proposal to widen the existing route through Sperryville by taking out ]Lester Deal’s sandwich and antique shop which is boarded up.
One VDOT representative said if the bridge in Sperryville has to be closed to truck traffic, trucks would have to be diverted off U.S. 522 at Massie’s Corner and Culpeper and off Route 231 at Madison. He said since U.S. 522 is primary road the bridge would have to be replaced and that process would probably take at least five months. In the meantime automobile traffic but not truck traffic would be able to use the much smaller bridges on routes 1001 and 1002.
