High School
Burglarized

The Rappahannock County High School was burglarized this past weekend.
According to Major Rick MacWelch of the Sheriff's Office, custodians at the school reported a vandalism at the school on Sunday morning. Major MacWelch, Sheriff Settle and Deputy Chris Williams responded to the scene along with Va. State Trooper W.A. Sumner and his dog Marko.
They discovered that a window had been broken in the office and there had been a burglary of an undetermined amount of cash and checks. Major MacWelch said that Marko helped establish a track of the suspect.
The scene was processed for fingerprints and evidence was collected, said Major MacWelch. A search warrant was obtained on Sunday afternoon and a suspect’s house in Rappahannock County was searched for evidence.
At press time, no suspect had been charged in the burglary, awaiting results of the fingerprint tests.
Also during the weekend, a forced entry burglary took place at the Child Care and Learning Center on U.S. in Washington. The burglar got into the office and took an undetermined amount of cash. There are similarities between this burglary and the one at the high school, said Major MacWelch.
Three warrants were sworn out for Michael Phelps, 28, .of Washington, for larceny of a weapon, theft of cash, and for threatening to kill and injure.
The complaints for the warrants came from his girlfriend, Kristien Miles of Washington, who claimed that Mr. Phelps had taken her luggage, her purse with $200 cash, clothing and a 22-caliber pistol, said Major MacWelch, who added that there is a dispute over who owns the property. Mr. Phelps was arrested and released on a $3500 bond.
Last Wednesday, Wayne Woodward, 29, of Luray, was charged with reckless driving following an accident on Route 641 in Flint Hill, .1 mile west of U.S. 522.
The early morning accident happened when Mr. Woodward drove through heavy fog in a 1990 Ford truck, lost sight of the road, and ran off the left side of the road, striking a tree, according to Trooper C.A. Moore's report. Mr. Woodward was not injured, but the truck suffered $4000 damage.
