learning are more demanding. Teachers of fourth graders, for example, are having to not only teach the new material for fourth grade, but also make sure their students cover the material now required of third graders but not required when those students were in third grade. However, the teachers do not really know what will be on the tests the students will be given on this material. Of the new Standards of Learning, Mrs. Tupper said, "In some cases they are very specific; some are very vague."

The new tests on this material will be field tested this May. There will be no reports on the results of these tests because the testers are trying to use them to learn what can be expected.

Mrs. Tupper said one change the school system has made this year to help with test results is to make up days missed because of bad weather earlier. In the past the school system used spring vacation and added a week at the end of the year to make up days missed. Those make-up days came after testing had been completed. This year, the schools are trying to make up days before tests are given.

Mrs. Tupper said they are having more problems with "behavior management." She said teachers "have to be innovative.”
