Since I began writing these pieces on nature just over a year ago, I have received many letters and not a few telephone calls from readers who have questions, comments, and wonderful stories to tell. Only days ago there was a message on our answering machine from Sybil Seltmann of Marshall, telling me that Juncos like, and even prefer, finely cracked com; the scratch feed usually reserved for young chickens, or peepies as we used to call them in North Carolina. That is useful and welcome news for this bird food is cheaper than that packaged specifically as wild bird seed.
Keith Severin of Reaching Oaks, Warrenton, has been a continuous reporter of perceptive, colorful and remarkably accurate observations of the natural world. A recent postcard carried this information: "This weeks sighting of 'significance'... A pair of bluebirds in the pyrancantha bush by my window. Downy Woodpeckers are persisting there too." Mr. Severin has written before of birds visiting and eating the bright red berries of the pyrancantha; and important source of winter food for berry-eating birds.
