Dr. Werner Krebser said the Rappahannock Medical Center carries Kwell shampoo to use in treating lice. The active ingredient is lindane, an insecticide that penetrates the skin and "has a potential for central nervous system toxicity." Dr. Krebser said it is very important to see that all of the shampoo is washed off. The clinic recommends that the child be retreated with the shampoo after a week, but parents should not use such a product routinely.

Dr. Krebser said lice can live for up to two weeks in clothes, and he believes this is responsible for children being reinfested after they are treated. Clothes should be laundered or dry cleaned, and if that is not possible, they should be stored on air tight bags for three weeks.
