TT«J fire tax does not fund new equipment for any of the fire and rescue squads in the county, so the fund: raisers are still necessary. A new ambulance is expected to be delivered to Sperryville within the next month and it cost $65,000. It is a demo model which originally cost $83,000. Even though grant money helps to purchase it, that takes a lot of hamburgers to pay for it.
Matt said that trips to the hospital in an ambulance would cost from $300 to $400 in an area with a paid rescue squad. And from there, he said, the price goes up for medications. "We work off donations and don’t ever want to see that change," he said.
Stacey Alther is the secretary for the squad, and attends a shock trauma class with Matt. They both said they spend a lot of their own money buying supplies for the rescue building. Stacy said she buys a lot of her own office supplies, and said "File folders are expensive."
Stacey and Matt can run solo calls, said Mrs. Payne, meaning that they can be the AIC (attendant in charge). They can run a call with just a driver for the ambulance and be in charge of a patient themselves. One of the requirements is being at least 18 years old; they must also be approved by the rescue captain to be an AIC. On one call to an older patient, said Stacey, the man looked up at her (surprised at how young she looked) and said, "Are you here to help me?"
