They joined the rescue squad at the same time. She is studying nursing at Piedmont Tech and will be an LPN once she graduates in about nine months. She then plans to join the Navy as a nurse.
Being so busy with school, Selena has been taking some time off from running calls, but has been helping out a lot with fund-raising.
Stacy Atkins has been with the rescue squad for two years and will graduate this year from RCHS. She began running rescue with her friend Selena, and plans to take the EMT> class this summer.
Right now she helps with the fund-raising, including the Miss Rappahannock Pageant. "Matt calls us when he needs help,” she said. Her mom, Dolly Atkins, is a geriatric nursing assistant.
Josh Waddell just joined the squad about a month ago. His career plans include the medical field, either as a doctor, paramedic or physician's assistant. He has not gone on any calls yet, explaining that he is a "go-fer," at least for now.
This! week he is taking his CPR , training. He is able to go on calls, and can help with the stretcher and bringing supplies to whomever needs them.
His dad used to run with a West Va. rescue squad and he has an aunt and uncle who are paramedics in West Va.
The Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad is sponsoring a fund-raising Valentine's dinner this _ Saturday at RCES from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The menu of barbeque chicken, wild rice, peas, salad, rolls, dessert and beverages is $8 each or $15 a couple; children under 8 cost $3.50.
"These kids are fantastic," said Mrs. Payne, and several of them will be working at the dinner.
