This is the third in a series about teenagers who fight fires and run rescue calls in Rappahannock County.
Like all volunteer fire and rescue workers in Rappahannock County, the teenagers at the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad drop whatever they're doing to respond to a call.
That might mean jumping out of bed in the middle of the night or hopping out of the shower right after they got in. So they might have to put on their jumpsuit right over their pajamas.
The Sperryville Rescue Squad, headed by Captain Geraldine Payne, is lucky to have six energetic and committed teenage members. Mrs. Payne's 18-year-old son, Matthew, is lieutenant on the squad. His family all joined the rescue squad following a near-fatal accident Matt had on a 4wheeler when he was in the seventh grade.
The 911 call went to Culpeper and it was 20 minutes before a team responded. Matt well remembers Roger Roach and Teddie Frock of Washington and Kenny Pullen of Flint Hill saving his life. Matt was slit open all the way across his stomach, said Mrs. Payne. He was flown to
