The challenges of preparing RCES children for new standardized tests, dealing with student misbehavior influenced by bad models on TV and combating head lice were some of the topics discussed at the meeting of the First Thursday Education Support group last Thursday.
Principal Raye Tupper and assistant principal Richard Smith attended the meeting to discuss changes at the elementary school, challenges and successes.
Mrs. Tupper said the school had "upped our preparation" for standardized testing and for giving the Literacy Passport Tests. She noted that this year the schools will be using different standardized tests. The entire state of Virginia has switched from the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills given to students in fourth, eighth and eleventh grades to Stanford 9 tests given in third, fifth, eighth and eleventh grades. In addition new tests just for Virginia students are being developed for the same grade levels to test how well schools are teaching the new standards of learning.
In recent years, fewer RCHS students have been passing the Literacy Passport Tests. To help correct that problem sample tests are given to fourth and fifth graders, and those considered likely to have trouble as sixth graders are given extra help.
