One parent expressed frustration with efforts to deal with head lice. She said her daughter had had them four times since the start of school. She said she had spent over $400 on treating her child, other members of the family and the house for lice.
She said, "It's a self esteem problem and a financial problem."
Mrs. Tupper said, "I understand." She went over policies the school had adopted to deal with lice. When lice are detected, the school nurse checks siblings and contacts the parents. The child is supposed to come back to school with an empty box of shampoo to prove he or she has been treated.
In addition a note is sent home to all parents of children in the same grade. Those parents are advised to check their children for lice. The school nurse checks all the other children in the same class for a week to see if anyone else has head lice.
Mrs. Tupper said she had met with a School Health Advisory Board and was following all their suggestions and even going beyond them.
