Panther basketball teams headed into the final week of the regular season with wins over Manassas Park last Friday. They were to face Brentsville away on Tuesday and George Mason away on Friday.
The JV squad also defeated George Mason at home last Tuesday, but the varsity had to come out of a defeat at home before the crucial road trip.
The JV has to win one of the remaining two games to make the JV championship game in the tournament. The varsity is playing for seeding in the tournament.
Against Manassas Park the varsity won 76-64. "It was a big win for us," Coach Eugene Baltimore said. "We needed that win. We've been struggling"
He said the game "started at the pace we wanted. It was an up and down game, and our kids were forcing it, not waiting for the other team. Our defense pickup up and caused Manassas Park to make turnovers. We were able to get a good lead and led by 12 points at half time."
Senior Jeff Atkins "picked up our game as usual" Coach Baltimore said. He had 28 points and contributed to the defense with 7 steals. Ervin Phillips also contributed at both ends of the court and led in rebounding with 13.
